navigating the French public school system - Help!

My family is moving to Paris in January and we wish to have our two children attend a neighborhood public school. (No luck getting into our first choice --EABJM.) We may only be in Paris for 1 1/2 yrs so we wish to have our children learn the language. Does anyone have experience with the French public schools? Any insights and information would be extremely helpful. The kids also wish to play soccer. For my son, 3rd grade, I'm sure there will be many opportunities, but how about for a 6 yr old girl?
