visa/OFII advice sought

Hello,
Yesterday, we went to the French Embassy in D.C. to apply for a long-term visa (we will only be in France, non-working, for 107 days, but we had to have a long-stay visa for over days). Upon arrival, we are supposed to go to Marseille and register at the OFII office. Apparently, it takes up to 60 days to process the paperwork there. At that point, we are called in to have medical exams! We are not allowed to leave France until that last paperwork is done. Too bad! We wanted to travel and won't have much opportunity to do that now. Anyway, if anyone has had any experience with this, with that office in Marseille, with having to go through a medical exam (which doctor, for examples?), etc. I would really appreciate hearing about those experiences. Thank you!
We are leaving Sept 1 and will be in France in Provence through December 15.
