US Expat in France Can't Buy Life Insurance

I am a US Citizen and recently relocated to Paris for the next 2-3 years for my firm.
In doing some estate planning, I applied for whole life insurance with my US insurance agent. I was told by my agent that most companies such as Mass Mutual, MetLife and Northwestern will not write a life insurance policy for expats who are currently living outside of the US.

Has anyone else dealt with something like this before or heard about this?

I need life insurance and will be heading back to the states in a few years. Your guidance is appreciared.
