HELP with renting in Montpellier

I desire to move to Montpellier and I j ust got off the phone with a rental ageny. They told me you must have a job first before they can help you rent an apartement.. However they did tell me that if you go directly to the apartement owners and can prove that you have enough income to live on than you they can rent to you. So can anyone here help me with finding direct access to the property owners or property managers whom I can deal with?
