Nursing Home Care

Hi all,
What is the French approach to long term care in a skilled facility, such as a nursing home? I know in the U.S., they can be pretty horrific, expensive, and a very sad way to spend your last days/years. Are the French more progressive in the quality of care? How are costs covered? Does private health insurance cover something like this, or is there a dedicated long term care policy that would need to be purchased.
