To-Do-List Needed

I read an article in Expatica regarding the move to France. It kinda scared the both of us. From needing an interview with a consulate to reams of paperwork to the most problematic: spending a great deal of money on a castle and only be able to live there for 90 days at a clip.

So, how do we move to France, enjoy our golden years (he's 82, I'm 71 - both of us healthy as horses), without having to vacate our home!
