Long Stay Artist Visa only issued for 3 months - how to best extend while in France?

Hello!

My question is what is the best way to extend a freelance work visa while in France.

From the US, I recently applied for a long-stay work visa (+1 year) as a freelance photographer, but was only approved for 3 months. I provided sufficient bank statements, 2 letters from potential employers, medical insurance, a multi-project letter of intent, etc., yet was upset to find the result such a short lived visa.

The letter from my main employer essentially stated that I will be employed full-time as a freelancer, but did not include any start or end date of said employment. My letter of intent also did not include any concrete start/end date of my planned projects. It's unfortunately the nature of the freelance life. Perhaps I should be happy I even got a visa?

What's the best way for me to start preparing to renew/extend my current visa? Does anybody know what they look for when reviewing freelance/artist visas? My ideal intent is to stay in France for a few years.

Thanks for all of your input!
