VSF Global and OFII

Has anyone here recently applied for an initial one year visa for France through the VSF application process or recently applied for a Carte De Sejour under the OFII process?

I started my application on the france-visas.gouv.fr website which I assume is managed by VSF Global. But there were a few questions I did not understand such as what is a national identity number - which I think does not apply to Americans - and WHAT IS A VISAPRO NUMBER. I also did not find a list of required documents to bring to the initial VFS appointment. Apparently, I will not get this list until I submit my application and schedule the appointment.

When I called VFS's NY office, I was told that they will not assist me in filling out the application until I submitted it and registered for an appointment and then then pay for their counselers to help me.

As for the next stage in France known as OFII and getting a Carte De Sejour, I cannot find a published list of the documents required.

Obviously, I do not want to move to France and then find out that I am missing required information. For example, I believe that a birth certificate IS NOT required for the initial visa but IS required for OFII.

Is there anyone that can help me with this new system? Should I simply pay whatever VFS wants so that I am certain to meet all the requirements?
