Residency and work requirements to maintain residency permit

This may be specific to each prefecture but when renewing a CDS, how they determine whether you met the requirement for residency i.e. at least six months each year spent in France?

Also, if you have a work permit, what happens if you quit your job? I read somewhere that after two years, the work requirement is no longer appliable.

Lastly, if you have a multi-year CDS, how do they determine whether you met the residency requirement for the multiple year period? Do they check your passport or can they somehow look it up in their system?

I want to travel after the COVID restrictions are lifted but don't want to make a mistake that prevents me from renewing by CDS.
