Longing for beauty but have generally low tolerance for heat; cooler place in France would be ideal: any suggestions?

Of course we are looking for beauty (buildings, landscape) and other English speakers and the hope of economically buying a small home someday with garden (?)...we have house here in the States we could sell worth several thousand dollars...would form nice older birds' nest egg...give us some security...want ability to travel easily by train to other places in Europe...we are journalist/creative writer/artist...somewhat introverted couple, mid-sixties...one of us once, long ago, lived/worked in London for a year, loved it...
