Does anyone have any definitive advice on UK stamp duty, I'm getting conflicting advice on whether the purchase of a French Property attracts UK Stamp Duty (SDLT) at the higher rate for 2nd homes. This from NatWest says it does (see box out entitled "What if the property is overseas?"):
https://www.natwest.com/mortgages/news-and-articles/guide-to-stamp-duty-on-second-homes.html#:~:text=It%20doesn't%20matter%20if,caravans%2C%20mobile%20homes%20or%20houseboats.
But others say it's only foreign buyers purchasing in the UK who get hit, which makes more sense. The HMRC web site does not explicitly address buying a foreign property but does often use the phrase " buying a residential property in England or Northern Ireland".
So I'm hoping it won't apply. Any advice from anyone who has been hit or missed by this?
Thanks
Jon
