volunteering, community involvement and language learning in France

Greetings. My wife and I are in the early stages of preparing for a move to France (from the United States) in retirement. Neither of us speaks French well and thus I am wondering whether others on this forum have experience with volunteering and community involvement in France as ways to immerse oneself in the language. I ought to state here that we are not contemplating living in Paris or the Ile-de-France. Thanks.
