Cost of Living in Karlsruhe Germany??

Hello, my family and I are considering a move to Karlsruhe. We have traveled to Germany and have lived in the Czech Republic and love Germany! I like to do my research before a decision is made though as the cost of living is a lot more than here in Canada. I would like to be sure that we would be making enough of an income to have a decent stay in Germany. My family consists of my hubby, myself and our 6yr. old son. We don't know what the tax system is, is it about a total of 45% with all the taxes, insurances etc., the cost of utilities, food and housing? And save some money to be able to travle throughout Europe. What would be a good income to do all this. We would like a decent flat, with 2 bedrooms in a good part of the city! Our son attends a French school and we hear that there is one in Karlsruhe, is it expensive...as we need to factor all of these things. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
