Why I should apply to be a resident before moving?

I bought a house in Guatemala planning to retire there in a couple of years, I need information about residency , do I start applying now or wait ? what are the benefit of being a resident? Do I need to pay taxes for shipping my personal belongings including my car? or is it cheaper to buy there than to shipped? For the meantime, I am thinking renting out the new house which is in a very desirable area of Pinares, San Cristobal de Mixco, probably by car 15 minutes to the city and less than 30 minutes to Antigua. Any information to share will be highly appreciated.
