Getting Ready

Hello all,

I am a teacher in Indiana at the moment, but will be moving in July to teach in Guatemala City for the next two years. I am very excited for this new adventure, but as a teacher, I'm a bit of a planner. I spent the previous summer living in Gua with a local family, so I'm familiar with several areas, and the different transportation option available. Though I know there are lots of choices that make having a car unnecessary, I would like to have a car for convenience and comfort since I will be there for an extended time. I believe a long term lease would be the wisest choice financially, but have only been able to find one rental company that isn't just a by the day/week rental. I don't know if car dealership offer leases, or not like they do in the US. Really any information on long term rentals would be much appreciated.

Also, I've done a little research into the driver's license situation. Is the international drivers license acceptable for extended stays or only for the typical 90 day tourist visa? Do I have to get the permit if I am able to find a rental car?

Thanks in advance!
