Suggestions for Visiting Roatan First week of Jan 2014

Hello
We are travelling from Belize to Honduras via bus and water taxi first week of January 2014.
Heard the Roatan is nice to visit.
Any comments on best way to get there from Honduras, ferry possibly?
We like snorkeling and water sports so this sounds interesting.
Also any suggestions on places to stay under $75 CDN a night that is safe would be appreciated.
