Planning on moving to Ireland in 3 to 4 years, and I need advice.

Hello, all!

My name is Sarah Blair, and I'm currently studying to obtain my Master's Degree in Medieval Studies. Within the next three years, I will have graduated, and by the fourth year, I expect to be able to move to Ireland to live with my other half.

I've already been given the whole lecture about moving any distance to be with someone, how nightmarish it could potentially be if "things don't work out," ad infinitum. Considering the length, ingenuousness, and seriousness of our bond, I'm more than willing to take that risk. That aspect isn't an issue for me.

I've visited Ireland many times, as well as studied their history and literature, thus I am comfortably familiar with the culture and general way of things. Even if it weren't for my significant other, I would like to live and work in Ireland. I'm also familiar with the shattered state of the Irish economy, so I have no illusions of proverbial rivers of milk and honey concerning the job market.

That aside, my more major concerns are centered around international moving costs, the cost of living itself, and whether or not there is a decent enough market for historians that I might have a chance at employment in the coming years while simultaneously working through the 7-year-long(ish) naturalization process.

Basically, I am looking to find out how much money I will need to have saved for the move, what I should do in general, and broadly what I should avoid in the moving abroad/expat/Irish citizenship process. Additionally, I plan to nix my US citizenship, as once I am gone I am not looking back...and I don't feel like being on the US Govt's "Persons of Interest" list.

Any and all advice is welcome, and I thank you for your time and consideration in reading my long-winded query.

Slan agus beannacht leat,
Sarah
