One way ticket to Ireland

I will be visiting Ireland in November. At this point I only have a one way ticket. I do not yet know my departure date so don't want to buy a ticket yet. I'm a U.S. citizen and I am retired. I have some options for possible work away positions in Ireland so don't want to be locked down to a definite departure date.
I heard I may encounter problems entering Ireland with a one way ticket.
I'm looking for some answers and advice.
