Staying in Ireland more than 3 months

We are packing to go back to the States, bittersweet tonite....but just to let you know about staying more than 3 months ....my husband was told to stop into the local garda station to inform them he was staying a bit longer in the country than the 3 months ( this was Shannon customs)...so we stopped at our local station....and the garda said to us....what am I suppose to do...they never heard of this....we were just staying one week over the 3 months....they finally took a copy of his USA passport and asked us where we were living....lol!
