Near the North for a job but in the South to live

I would love some advice about some suggestions as where a good place would be to live in the live in South but working in the North. Seems that my partners ancestry UK visa (he is Australian) allows him only to work in the North. I wanted to live in Galway (long way to work for him sadly). He is a carer for Disability services here. Any idea if short time jobs are realistic ( we will be in Ireland for 3 months from March, then back at the end of the year for another 3 month). My 18 year old daughter is looking for casual work (retail) is that realistic for 3 months and any tips on that? Thanks so much
