U.S. citizen buying a car in Ireland

Hello all,
Appreciate any comments. Here is the situation. My wife and I spend a lot of time in Ireland because we love it. We are about to purchase a property in County Donegal. We are U.S. citizens, about to retire, and we will spending up to six months a year in Ireland. We will be purchasing a car for our use. I understand that insurance can be a bit of a challenge, but we can deal with that. But I'm wondering about a couple of other things. How long can we drive on our U.S. licenses? At what point do we apply for an Irish license? I assume we'll need to complete the Irish driving school/training?

We would appreciate any comments or advice, especially from U.S. citizens who have done this.

Thank you very much!
