American (hopefully) relocating to IE

Hello! I'm a U.S. citizen, 53, currently freelancing for a Canadian editing company & hoping to move to Ireland.

Following is what I THINK I need to do -- please correct me if I'm wrong!

I need to have an Irish employer to "sponsor" me to obtain a work permit. Then I need to set up as a self-contractor with Irish Revenue for tax purposes. Then I can apply for a long-stay ("D") visa. (Then...?)

Questions: Does all this sound right? What am I missing? In what order do I need to do things? And what needs to be done here in the U.S. before the move and what needs to wait until I'm in Ireland? Other??

I am entirely grateful for ANY help. Thank you so very much!!
