How do Americans get visas beyond 90 days in Ireland?

I know about the income requirements ($250,000 cash on hand, plus $50,000 income per year, not counting stocks/bonds) -- but are there any other ways to get beyond a 90 day tourist visa? I don't want to cash out my 401k / investments just long enough to put the $ in a bank and then once approved, pull it out and put it back into a 401k.
