annual physical exam in Italy

This question is really aimed at Non-EU citizens, since the EU experience would differ.

I am an American living in Italy. Does the national health care system here cover an annual physical exam (cholesterol, heart, blood, etc.). I have a bad family history of men dropping dead in their early 50s and one way to take care of myself has been to get an annual checkup. I don't really know if they do that here, if it is covered by national health insurance, and if I can just call my regular doctor to ask for it.

Any experience or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
Dan
