Marrying in Italy, Living in England

My fiance is Italian, but living in England. We plan to get married in Italy in December, but will reside in England. I'm American and will leave for England this summer.

Any advice on which visa to apply for? I'm thinking I should apply for a fiance visa in the UK first and then an Italian spouse visa when the fiance visa runs out, but I'm just not sure....We'll call the consolate, but wondered if anyone out there has any experience with this or knows of any good resources. Thanks!
