Birth In Italy for Dual Citizenship

Ciao, expats!

My wife and I are getting ready to start a family and we've always talked about giving birth in an EU country for dual citizenship (so when it hits the fan in the US, the kid can get out of here, for one thing!).

Since my wife is fluent in Italian and spent a year living in Padova (many of her friends are still there), we've been thinking about going to Italy to deliver next summer. (We could also do France as we have family who have an apartment in Paris and there's an American Hospital nearby, but we'd prefer Italy).

Has anyone had experiences with the hospitals in Italy, maybe even with delivering a child there? I read the recent article on the site about dual citizenship, and there are few legal concerns that I see.

My wife tends to remember that most of the hospitals she had experience with in Italy were very attentive to the needs of the mother. And I know midwifery is a big thing in Italy (and Europe in general).

So if anyone has any experience or knowledge that might help us, we'd sure appreciate it!

Thanks!

Eric
