Money Transfers

Has anyone had the experience of transferring (wiring) large amounts of US dollars (six figures) to Italy for the purpose of buying a house? Suggestions? Pitfalls? What type of financial institution is best to use? I am concerned about getting the best exchange rate, minimizing fees and keeping the transaction safe. I've asked this question before, but never seem to hear from anyone who has already done this. Thanks in advance for any help you may offer.
