A 43 yr old teacher wanting to fulfill her dream....too late?

Hi everyone!
I went to Italy for the 1st time last year and simple loved it. Every day I dream about returning. I currently teach in upstate NY right now and want to move to italy....I'm wondering if I'm a bit too 'mature' to do this.
Also is it really that difficult to get a work visa?
One more question I was just told by a friend that I need to get my college transcripts translated into Italian and go to the Italian Cons in NYC and see what they can tell me in terms of employment (she said they won't answer the phone..or if they do, I won't get very far). She mentioned getting the transcripts translated costs around $1,000
True??
Thanks! I would appreciate whatever advice I can get...
