When I needed medical attention while visiting Amsterdam, I was asked about medications I was taking. When I related that I regularly take 81mg of apiring daily -- a common regimen in the US to avoid strokes or heart attacks -- the good doctors at this modern hospital were surprised and unaware of this simple treatment. It got me thinking about what medications or simple treatments like this that may be off the radar screen in Italy -- where I hope to live starting in 2014. I take statins for cholesterol and a med for underactive thyroid. I also take another med daily for acid reflux. I have a feeling that acid reflux and high cholesterol may not be as big a health problem in Italy as in the US. Has anyone had any experiences or insights into this type of transition for the US to Italy? Have your drugs been available? Have you had to accept subsitutes? Any advice would help me better prepare for my move. BTW, I have dual citizenship and will expect to be on the state health plan in Italy. Thanks! Tom
