House Insurance

I've learned a lot about the process of buying property in Italy; but I know very little about house insurance. I've been told that many in Italy do not insure their houses against fire, theft, etc. Is this true? Is insuring a house in Italy different from insuring a house in the US? Are costs for insurance comparable to the US rates? Just trying to prepare in advance of my move to Italy (in 2014, I hope).
