Visa Information

My boyfriend is a German citizen and has been working in Italy for a few months. I am a US citizen living in the US. His contract has been extended for another year. Is there a way of him being able to sponsor me and my child for a longer visa than the 90 day tourist visa? If I took Italian language classes and got a student visa could he be my support proof? Italy seems a little more strict about their visas than Germany and I am not finding much information. Any information or where to look would be great.
