Suggestions for car make/model?

In my rental car in Puglia I find myself on small dirt roads that get rutted when it rains. I am also considering buying a property that has a steeply-graded driveway giving me some concern for those days when it's wet or dusted with snow. I don't especially like automobiles, but this time around I should be mindful and practical about terrain. But I don't want an SUV. I would like to stay with a smaller, efficient car. Manual, of course. Would all wheel drive help me up that hilly driveway? If any cars come to mind, please feel free to offer an opinion and then I'll do some additional research. Thanks.
