Help in moving from Ct United States to Guardiaregia Italy

My fiancé and I live in Ct. He has a house in Guardiaregia Italy. We have been several times and are considering retiring there. His family was born there but his father, who moved to United States, never gave up his Italian citizenship, but when he passed his death certificate said that he was a dual citizen. My fiance has a fiscal #, owns property and a home and pays taxes but has had difficulty with the Italian Consulate. We are going in August for a month and hope to get more information on our options. If anyone can shed some light on this issue please feel free to share your knowledge. Greatly appreciated! - Gigi
