Build vs buy home

Hi All,

I was looking for a home around Rome to retire for 4 month. Price range is 450K Euro max and I do not see something I really like. My impression is that Roman/Classical architecture was forgotten. Anyway I am considering building a home because
1. I'll get something closer to what I like.
2. I can do some finishing myself, so I can save some $$$.

I suspect I have a naive view on building process underestimating bureaucracy and other red tape.

Any real life experience would be really helpful.
