Move to Italy for 1 year

Hi there,

My husband and I are looking to move our family (us and our 2 kids) to Italy for 1 year. I have reached out to the Italian consulate in San Francisco and they told me that it wasn't possible. The said we either need to be on a work or student visa. I asked about the Extended Residence Visa and they said that is only for people who are retired and relocating to Italy. Do any of you have advice on how we can take a year off from work and move to Italy? We have the financial means to prove we can do this. Thanks!
