reacquisition of citizenship

Hi- we're planning to travel to Italy to establish residency as part of the requisition of citizenship process. I am told that we need not be there more than 90 days for this. Does anyone know if we can do a short term rental or "holiday rental" and have it considered as acceptable "residence" in this process? Thanks in advance!
