For those of you who have been having trouble meeting the requirements imposed by Italy in obtaining a visa for entry, there is a work-around. Portugal. Portugal has a simpler process for entry and also provides some benefits. They have a 10 year program in which they will not charge taxes on passive income (social security and pensions). American drivers licenses can be exchanged without written and road tests. The visa process is easier and they have a golden visa for those with money to invest (property) and a 20% cap on taxes. Citizenship is offered after 6 years. Access to the rest of Europe and Italy becomes easier once you are an official Portuguese resident. The cost of living in Portugal is on average 30% less than Europe. So your "Italian" dream may still be achievable, with a small detour.
