Virtual Work in Italy

One of the elective residency issues which I have read about is the requirement of not working while living in Italy. If I have a source of consulting income with U.S clients, is that potential deal breaker it’s the ERV?I would like to show that income as art of the income requirement, but my concern is that it could be looked on unfavorably. I would appreciate any thoughts on this from those who may have had to deal its that kind of issue.
Related to that, what does the Consulate typically want to see with respect to passive rental income in the U.S.?
