Re-learning Italian

I’m planning to move to southern Italy. I lived in Rome for several years as a teenager, even went to school there. At the time I spoke like a native Italian, but that was a few decades ago.

I watch RAI news every day, I understand everything but my Italian is rusty. I can do small talk, but have difficulty with more complex topics. Italian is my 4th EU language so I tend to mix things up, borrow some French words with the same Latin root, and even throw in some English when I’m stuck.

I probably need several months of practice with people that can anticipate what I’m trying to say and throw me words on the fly. Is that even possible? Most people feel that it’s rude to correct me as I speak, but I enjoy it.

Can anybody sympathize? Any ideas?
