Citizenship via parent or grandparents

Hello,

I have looked into this a few times over the years but I've never managed to fully understand if there is any way I am able to gain Italian citizenship. I would be grateful for any help.

I am an Australian citizen. My grandparents came to Australia in the 60s and never renounced their Italian citizenship or became Australian citizens.

My father became an Australian citizen I believe later in life (as an adult), but before I was born.

I understand this may have essentially cut all my ties, is that correct?

If so, is my father able to regain his italian citizenship - thereby allowing me to apply in turn?

Thanks!
