Question about Northern Sardinia

For ease of travel to Denmark, where our son lives, plus shorter flight times and cost, we are considering the northwest coast of Sardegna as a base as opposed to Alghero or Caligari. With that said, I am looking for recommendations for towns or villages in that general area within an hour or so drive to the airport. Any recommendations? We are not interested in heavily tourist towns...lived in Miami and other parts of Florida most of our lives and had just about all my wife and I can take of that lifestyle. We do know that that is part and parcel of most of the coastal areas but just do not want to be in the center of all of that and would prefer a locale with few expats as we desire to immerse ourselves in the local community. Also, comments about other areas would be greatly appreciated.
