Promise I searched the forum first - NOT immigrating yet, want to test the waters.

Hello all,

I've read through about a dozen pages of the forum and have learned a lot, but my wife and I had hoped to do something different than most posters - we'd like to try living in Italy for a year, as sort of a 'fact-finding mission" prior to deciding if it makes sense for us long term. Am I correct in thinking that there's no middle ground to this, it's either the elective residence visa or nothing? We frankly would not be able to prove anything like what they require for income - we've got more than sufficient savings currently accessible and would purchase any necessary insurance, but we're not yet at an age where touching 401ks or social security makes any sense at all.

I'm not silly enough to think that just because we want something it must be possible, but have I missed an alternative? I presume it matters that we have no intention of holding jobs while there..?

Many thanks in advance.
