Travelling for a year or more

When my husband and I retire, in the next year, we want to travel through Italy for a year or so staying in a different city for a month then moving on. I've been checking into short term apartment rentals but the agency fees are so high and AirBNBs would be too expensive for a year. Other than hostels, can anyone suggest a cost effective way to do this? We don't mind putting deposits on apartments as long as we get them back. Thanks
