Rent or Buy

Hi I am getting ready to retire and my wife and I are thinking of getting a place in Italy so we can spend several months a year there, while still maintaining our US home. In a situation like this, when we are not sure yet if we would like to remain there full time, but instead like we said possibly vacation there a few months a year would it be better to look to buy or rent a place? Would appreciate any thoughts on this based on your personal experience or knowledge. Thanks and Cheers!
