Car Rental in Puglia

We are visiting Puglia in Sept to hopefully look at the area - we are looking at perhaps renting for a year initially before considering buying and retirement.

But first, we are travelling from Florence to either Bari or Martina Franca by train and then hope to rent a car (Sep 10 - 16).

It seems cars are hard to find or prices are extremely high - are there any tips that we can consider?

We will be looking into real estate agents that can show up some homes but we still need our own transportation to drive around and get a feel for the area.
