Codice Fiscale

Hello,
I am in Italy right now on a month long visit. I wanted to apply for Codice Fiscale while I am here, but
I was told that In order to obtain Codice Fiscsale while in Italy, US citizens need to have a Schengen visa in their passports.
Otherwise, I would need to apply for Codice Fiscale at Los Angeles consultate, when I return home from Italy. Does anyone have an experience with obtaining Codice Fiscale? Thank you.
