Swimming Lessons and Sports for Kids

I'm wondering who offers swimming lessons for kids -- private pools, municipalities, etc. Or how kids join sports teams.

I've heard that kids don't have sports in school, but have to join clubs. How do these work? Is it like joining a team, or more like joining a gym with multiple sports. Does the whole family join the same club?

As you can see, I'm very much in the dark about this. Would like to get my kids into some extracurriculars this fall and looking for a place to start. My limited Italian is returning disappointing search results.
