Long Term Renter with pet

My wife and I, who live in Florida, are planning to spend a couple (up to 3) months in Italy and were thinking about arranging to bring our now 2 year old poodle with us. Just a quick look at what's required (transporting dog both ways), we now think it may be more trouble than its worth. Thoughts? Has anyone done this successfully and had a good experience?
