Venice or a metropolitan city like Florence, Rome or Bologna?

In my daydreams, I see myself logging onto my work laptop while looking out at a nearby canal. I honestly do not know how realistic this would be. I don't even know what current internet service is like in Venice or elsewhere in Italy. I am in the early stages of thinking/dreaming and I'm sure there are a lot of things I just don't know about and/or am not taking into consideration. I guess it's a rather broad question but would it be realistic for me to live and work from a tiny apartment (used to that part!) in Venice for a month or three or should I consider an urban city instead?
