Moving to Malaysia - would like advice on great locations to settle.

My husband and I are retiring and moving to Malaysia from the U.S. in early 2015. We are looking for a smaller town where we can walk to produce markets and grocery stores and be a great area to walk, in general. Coastal would be nice. Proximity to an international airport would be helpful. We want to live close enough to get to Singapore within 4 hours by car, bus or train. We have visited the Johor area and Melaka and like Melaka, but the city is larger than we like. Any advice that you can give on great locations to settle, based on our criteria, would be appreciated.
